Tour Overview
Most Tanzania safaris follow the northern parks. This one goes somewhere far rarer.
Nyerere National Park , formerly the Selous Game Reserve , covers an area larger than Switzerland. It shelters one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife on the continent. Yet very few tourists ever visit. That is precisely what makes it extraordinary.
Here, you do things that no northern park allows. In the morning, a boat carries you down the Rufiji River , Africa’s mightiest waterway. Crocodiles line the banks. Hippos wallow in the shallows. Fish eagles call from dead trees overhead. Elephants drink at the water’s edge. It feels completely unlike any game drive.
In the afternoon, an armed ranger leads you through the bush on foot. Every track, every sound, and every smell suddenly carries meaning. You read the landscape differently when you move through it at walking pace.
Additionally, wild dogs appear here more reliably than almost anywhere else in Tanzania. Lion prides hunt open plains with few vehicles to disturb them. Buffalo travel in enormous herds.
If you want a safari that feels genuinely wild and far from the crowds, Nyerere is waiting.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Nyerere National Park
Either fly or drive from Dar es Salaam into one of Africa’s largest and least visited national parks, Nyerere, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve. The park covers an area larger than Switzerland and shelters one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife on the continent.
Arrive at your camp in time for lunch, then head out on your first afternoon game drive through the park’s diverse habitats. Wild dogs, one of Africa’s most endangered and exciting predators, are frequently spotted here. So too are enormous crocodiles, pods of hippos, elephant herds, buffalo, leopard, and lion. Dinner and overnight at camp with the sounds of the African bush all around you.
Day 2: Boat Safari & Walking Safari – Nyerere
Today brings two uniquely immersive experiences that set Nyerere apart from Tanzania’s northern parks. The morning starts with a boat safari on the Rufiji River, Africa’s largest river in terms of water flow. Drifting silently past banks lined with crocodiles and hippos, watching fish eagles swoop overhead and elephants drink at the water’s edge, is unlike any land-based game drive.
After lunch, set off on a guided walking safari, one of the few places in Tanzania where this is permitted. Walking through the bush with an experienced, armed guide puts you in direct contact with the ecosystem in a way no vehicle ever can. Tracks, sounds, smells, and small details come alive. This is wild Africa at its most raw and real.
Day 3: Morning Game Drive – Return to Dar es Salaam
One last early morning drive through the park before transferring to the airstrip or road for your journey back to Dar es Salaam. Nyerere has a way of getting under your skin, many guests leave already planning their return.
